Strontium is found in natural seawater in a concentration of 8 to 10 mg / l. It is chemically very similar to calcium, and many organisms include it in their skeletons along with calcium. Its addition to reef aquariums promotes the growth of corals, coral algae and other calcareous or shell-forming organisms, including tridacnus.
Reef Advantage Strontium ™ restores and maintains strontium levels in natural seawater. Strontium is utilized by corals in the same way as calcium and is equally important for maintaining high growth rates. It is most useful in densely populated aquariums that require a continuous supply of strontium. Reef Advantage Strontium ™ is a highly concentrated (30,000 ppm) ionically balanced strontium additive.
Unlike other strontium chloride products, Reef Advantage Strontium ™ is designed to be added directly to the aquarium. Competing products require mixing a separate solution before adding it to the system.
Usage
Newbie
Use 6 g (1 flat teaspoon) per 150 L (40 gallons) twice a week. Can be added directly to the aquarium. Use the digital Seachem Spoon Scale for accurate dosing.
Advanced
Check the strontium level (use Reef Status ™ Strontium to check the strontium levels), then follow the addition regimen above until the strontium is brought to 8-12 mg / L. Every 6 g / 150 L the strontium is raised by about 2 mg / L. The quantity or frequency can be adjusted as needed. Thereafter, use as needed to maintain strontium.
Expert
After determining the rate of depletion of strontium, set up a continuous drip irrigation system. Use the following formula (or skip the math and use our dosage calculator) to determine how much to add to the water to top up: m = vs / 30 (m = grams to add to water to top up, v = tank volume in liters, s = amount to increase strontium in mg / l). For example, if you want to increase the strontium level by 6 mg / L in a 200 liter aquarium, you must add (200x6) / 30 = 40 g to the top-up water. [For reference: 1 gallon = 3.8 liters]. Use the Reef Status ™: Strontium Test Kit to test strontium levels.
DO NOT OVERDOSE: Excess strontium can exacerbate the loss of carbonate alkalinity. Do not mix directly with carbonate additives. It is best if the strontium and carbonate supplements are added every other day or at intervals of at least 30 minutes.
