Iodide is an essential element for invertebrates and many soft corals (gorgonians, sarcophytons, etc.). Reef Iodide ™ is a concentrated (8000 mg / L) stabilized source of potassium iodide for reef aquariums that restores and maintains iodide levels to levels found in natural seawater. It is designed to provide a safe source of iodine that does not convert to toxin-free iodine in storage or reef conditions. Iodine is as toxic as chlorine and should never be used in reef systems. However, iodide is just as safe as chloride.
Most of the iodine supplements on the market are simply potassium iodide or a medicated disinfectant commonly known as Lugol's solution. Lugol is a highly concentrated iodine / iodide solution that is highly toxic and intended for disinfection. Although such products are marketed for use in reef aquaria, we believe the risks far outweigh the potential minor benefits. Reef Iodide ™ is designed to provide a safe source of iodide that does not convert to toxic free iodine in storage or reef conditions.
Products containing only potassium iodide are safer alternatives, but are not very effective on their own due to the instability of iodide in the aquarium environment. When added to an aquarium environment, iodide becomes unstable, converting to elemental iodine (which is biocidal), iodate (which is useless to corals, toxic at elevated levels and cannot be tested) and iodide, which is the only form of iodine available to corals for absorption. The inherent instability of these foods makes them potentially harmful to coral health. Unlike competing products, Reef Iodide ™ forms a complex with a stabilizing compound to keep it in iodide form when added to the aquarium. The entire product remains usable and completely bioavailable.
Newbie
Add 5 ml (1 cap) for every 200 L (50 US gal) every other day.
Advanced
Add 1 ml for every 80 L (20 US gal) daily to increase the iodide level by 0.10 mg / L. If necessary, adjust the amount so that the iodide content is 0.06–0.08 mg / L 6–12 hours after the last amount. Then use this amount daily and check the iodide twice a month.

After determining the iodide consumption rate, set up the continuous drip irrigation system. Use the following formula (or skip the math and use our dosage calculator) to determine how much to add to the top-up water: m = 0.125vi (m = ml of product added to the top-up water, v = tank volume. In liters, i = amount of iodide in mg / l). For example, if you want to increase the iodide level by 0.10 mg / L in a 200 liter tank, you must add 0.125x200x0.10 = 2.5ml to the top-up water. [For reference: 1 gallon = 3.8 liters]. Notes It is normal for iodide levels to drop after a few days. This occurs as a result of recycling and chemical depletion. Therefore, the amount and / or frequency of use may vary. The amount used can be adjusted depending on the response of the corals. Use the Seachem MultiTest ™ Iodine and Iodide Test Kit to check iodide levels.
